Running After Age 40

with 2 comments

When I was younger running came naturally and easily. I would jump out of bed, get dressed, run down the stairs, eat and fly out the door. I would be gone all day, running around the neighborhood with my friends and hardly ever sitting still. Now, things hurt; ankles, knees, back, shoulders……..some concessions have to be made.

It takes longer to warm up and my speed is not quite what it used to be. Shorter steps have replaced the bone-jarring, long-legged strides of my youth, well for the most part anyway. I still feel young and foolish every once in a while and sprint it out.

Gone are the consecutive running days, now I alternate working out at home with running the streets during the week. Gone are the days of eating anything in sight without a care in the world; now it’s mostly chicken, salads, fruits and vegetables. No fast food, no caffeine to speak of, although I did slip up the other day.

It’s harder to stay motivated now so I try to register for a 5K run here and there to give me something tangible to train for.

It’s not easy trying to stay in shape after age 40 but like my doctor tells me, “How we treat our bodies the first 50 years will decide how our bodies treat us the next 50.”

To Tip or Not To Tip….The Restroom Attendant

with 2 comments

“Oh yeah, make sure everyone has plenty of singles before we head out!”

Those instructions were shouted out last night by a friend before we made our way to one of the local watering holes. I had one single, one fin and a couple Andrew Jacksons in my wallet. I performed a “freebie” before leaving the house hoping I could minimize the outlay of cash during the evening.

Let’s get this out in the open first. I am not a cheapskate but do I really have to tip someone for the pleasure of being able to wash my hands? I mean, the establishment provides soap, water and towels in the restroom. What is the attendant doing for me that I can’t do for myself?

I used my single during the course of the evening after the attendant deftly pumped his supply of  liquid soap into my palm and equally skillfully handed me not one but two! sheets of paper towel. Phew, where would I have been without him?! If he really wanted a nice tip, he should have grabbed the germ infested handle and opened the door for me as I left!

The subsequent trip was another “freebie” because I only had the Benjamin and matching pair of Jacksons and I wasn’t going to ask for change or tip that large.

I can maybe understand having an attendant in an upscale restaurant or club but lately this area has been getting inundated with these “bathroom bullies” and trust me, the places I frequent are certainly NOT upscale. 🙂

So tell me, do you tip or not? If so, how much per trip?

Blondes, Brunettes and Redheads….Oh My!

leave a comment »

I’ve dated my share of blondes, brunettes and redheads over the years and it is with a certain level of “expertise” that I submit the following.

I used to have an idea of what my perfect woman would be; dark hair, big boobs and a Southern accent. Mind you, these are just the physical attributes in my ideal woman; there are many other assets that I look for, such as a sense of humor, kindness, honesty, blah blah blah……

Having strayed from that path a number of times, I have met all sorts of women possessing some of my ideals but not quite all of them. Online dating was fun for a while but sooner or later one starts seeing the same old faces. Even more interesting, one starts seeing the same young faces year after year after year. Do none of these women age? Perhaps I have already met them but couldn’t recognize their faces from their high school yearbook photo!

I have never dated a bald woman but the idea intrigues me and a full head of grey hair would be interesting as well.

Bruce Springsteen summed things up in his own way when he sang,

“Brunettes are fine and blondes are fun,

But when it comes to getting a dirty job done,

It takes a redheaded woman…”

While that may be true for The Jersey Devil, I have my own take on things:

Dating today is not for the weak,

Be wary of girls and what they seek.

You can’t be lax and you can’t be lazy,

Blondes are fun but they’re also crazy!

Regardless of whether it’s real or fake,

And I hope it’s just dye, for all their sake.

Something is wrong inside their brain,

Because redheads are fiery and truly insane!

While I’ve had my share of all the above,

I always go back to the locks I love.

I’ll take my chances and see what I get,

Because there’s nothing like a cute brunette!
